Expedia to offer Deutsche Bahn and international rail services to local and international travellers

Expedia, one of the world’s leading online travel companies, has launched Deutsche Bahn rail tickets as well as tickets for international rail routes, including for travel in the UK, to its users in Germany, with plans to extend to an international audience in early 2018. The deal sees Expedia expanding its range of travel products for the German market to include air, hotel, car rental, cruise, packages and now rail.

Thanks to SilverRail's technology, Expedia.de offers rail users in Germany the ability to view at a glance all available train journeys from Deutsche Bahn on any given route by surfacing all trains including prices on the requested day, giving travellers the choice of making the best time-price tradeoff for themselves.

German customers are now not only able to book rail tickets within Germany, but are also able to book rail travel within certain countries they book on Expedia.de; with the entire search and book path in German and in Euros. Intra-city UK rail – including airport trains like Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted Express – has already launched, with other popular European rail operators following throughout next year. In 2018, users of Expedia in some other international markets will also be able to search and book rail travel in Germany on their local Expedia site.

Andreas Nau, Managing Director EMEA at Expedia said: “Helping people go places is core of what we do at Expedia and a critical piece of that is building out our capabilities in rail travel. The full-day search results and easy booking of international travel will make Expedia.de the go-to site for German rail travellers who want to get the best deals from Deutsche Bahn.

In the future, it will also allow travellers to create new types of package holidays, such as combining train travel with a hotel stay, a car hire, or other things to do at their destination.”

We’re particularly excited about being able to offer our rail customers PAYBACK loyalty points for every two Euros spent on train tickets, helping them save with every transaction.”

Tom Drexler, Vice President of Carrier IT and Distribution at SilverRail, said “Our technology platform enables Expedia to complete a missing link in the online travel market by offering a one-stop shop for travel. It simplifies multi-modal travel and makes it easy for travellers to select the best travel option or route.”

“By adding German rail content to some of its international sites in 2018, Expedia opens a new market for international travellers. I believe this will boost Germany’s tourism sector by opening-up its regions and smaller cities to international tourists, who will find it much easier to research and book their rail travel plans in Germany online,” added Drexler.

Earlier this year Expedia launched its first rail offering for the UK market, on Expedia.co.uk.
