A NEW AGE OF SEAMLESS MOBILITY IS UPON US

The application of smart technology to simplify door-to-door travel

Seamless Mobility™ is the future: the application of smart technology and data to help us travel around in an ever-more congested world. Helping people move intelligently, smoothly and hassle-free – on modes of transport that are economical and environmentally-friendly – is vital if transport systems are not going to simply implode.

At the forefront of this technology is global travel technology firm SilverRail, which has just unveiled seamlessmobility.com, a new website which positions them at the forefront of the global move towards Seamless Mobility.

“Seamless Mobility is not just a dream of a better future – the building blocks are being constructed right now,” says Aaron Gowell, CEO of SilverRail. “There are hundreds of initiatives setting the foundations for more intelligent mass transit systems but to date the information has been fragmented and dispersed. The new site will act as a centre for information and developments in the Seamless Mobility space as we look to make it a reality across the global transport ecosystem.”
The transport system of the future will have more rail, buses, bikes and cars that are self-driving and electric.  As a growing number of people adopt these methods of transport, cities need to embrace innovative technologies that make it easier for people to use different forms of mass transit and move seamlessly between them.

However, today’s biggest challenge is that the different transport types operate as self-contained systems, rather than integrated into a broader multimodal transportation network – so if your journey involves more than one mode of transport, you can find yourself frustrated by delays, congestion or undue overcrowding and complications.

Seamless Mobility can take those frustrations away thanks to advances in computing power, autonomous vehicles, big data and crowd-sourced information from social media. It makes the travelling experience smoother for individual travellers, while allowing an entire system to work better to improve the quality of life for everyone in the city.

In Sweden, SilverRail is already working in this space, working with rail networks, buses, taxis and other metropolitan transit providers – creating new technologies that allow travellers to plan, book, pay, and ticket all segments of a multimodal journey at once. And in the UK, SilverRail is powering Chiltern Railways ticket-free travel pilot; testing a new mobile ticketing app that automatically finds the best price deal for customers, eliminating the need for paper tickets and paving the way to make hassle-free rail travel a reality.

As well as integrating the data systems that underpin modern transport networks, SilverRail is leveraging emerging wearable and mobile technologies to make comprehensive and accurate travel information available when and where it is needed by the travelling public.

“To make Seamless Mobility a reality across the transport ecosystem, information needs to become reliable enough for people to have confidence in its accuracy, and for all modes of transport to be tightly integrated.” says Will Phillipson, President and Co-founder of SilverRail. “That does not often happen, and today the quality of the data available is one of the biggest challenges hindering smart mobility innovation.”

The new website will help spread the word about Seamless Mobility, highlighting the many benefits and showcasing the latest initiatives to improve transportation around the world.

INNOVATOR OR IMITATOR?

  • Why are we still printing tickets on paper?
  • Why can we not tell customers which trains are the most congested and what their choices are in real time?
  • What is preventing customers from having a travel account that all train operators recognise and charge to?
  • Why do we still need a train conductor to walk the length of the train asking to see your ticket?
  • Why does the train not know who you are and provide for you on a personal level?
  • There is no reason why all of this cannot be resolved with the technology that exists today.

Innovation requires leadership. Without it, we will only solve yesterday’s problems. Imitators take less risk because they start with an innovator’s product. SilverRail is an innovator, which at times can be a lonely place, especially in rail. We believe anything is possible if we put our minds to it. Rail started out through innovation but that was now, nearly 200 years ago…

The first public railway was proved to be financially viable with the Liverpool to Manchester route in 1830. The first passenger season tickets were issued in Canterbury, England in 1831. The world population reached 1 billion in 1830, having taken 50,000 years to get there. Then it reached 7 billion in 2011, taking only 12 years to increase by 1 billion. Congestion is clearly here to stay and it is innovation that will keep the railways usable and financially viable for customers.

The current pace of innovation is not meeting customer demand.  As an industry we need to be more agile if we are to truly fulfil the potential that mass transit can bring. This means investing in larger, faster and more efficient trains, more routes and making the infrastructure as efficient as possible.

Innovation provides the best platform for alliance creation and joint venturing. Here at SilverRail we know that we can’t solve all of the problems by ourselves, which is why we are so keen on technical integration with other best-in-breed suppliers so that the customer can be given the right information either on demand, or proactively at the right time.

Knowledge is power and for the rail customer this is equally true. It is our job to simply make rail travel work and it is the customer’s right to enjoy their travel using everyday technology as it evolves. The rail customer is already engaging with and using smartphones and wearable devices to interact with a broad range of travel, local and navigation technologies. Why can they not do this with rail?

The expectation is there and we need to rise to the challenge. So here are a few questions that as an industry we need to address:

Check out our view of what a rail journey could be like if we in the industry worked together over the next few years:

CHILTERN ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP TO DELIVER INNOVATIVE “TICKET-FREE TRAVEL” PILOT

Chiltern Railways has announced that innovative travel technology company SilverRail Technologies will be its partner in the development and pilot of a new approach to rail travel removing the need to buy and carry a ticket on the day – “ticket free travel”.

Chiltern Railways, an Arriva UK Trains company, conceived the idea in 2015 as part of a long term focus on improving the customer experience with the aim of making travelling as simple and frictionless as possible.  Arriva UK Trains submitted a proposal through the RSSB Future Railway competition and was awarded funding for six projects of which this pilot scheme is one.

This partnership between SilverRail and the train operator will allow passengers to use their smartphones to detect commencement of travel and use Bluetooth to open ticket gates, automatically charging the customer the best price for their journey at the end of the day.  At ungated stations geolocation tools are used to locate the customer and the trains travelled on.

Dave Penney, Managing Director of Chiltern Railways commented, “Customers want to travel easily with assurance that they have paid the best price; this app-based concept eliminates the need to purchase a ticket instead using Bluetooth and geolocation tracking to determine journeys taken charging the best value fare at the end of the day.  We chose to work with SilverRail as they share our drive for innovation and are an incredibly agile and innovative, rail focused organisation with a wide range of experience.”

In addition to the new way of paying for travel, the app will also offer personalised, real-time travel updates, commuter advice and multi-modal journey options.  “Our goal is to remove uncertainty and frustration to create a relaxed, stress-free journey for Chiltern’s commuters” says Carmel Roche, Head of Mobile at SilverRail Technologies. “We are extremely excited that Chiltern is embracing this opportunity to make door-to-door travel simple, seamless and cost effective.”

The pilot will be conducted on Chiltern’s newly built route between Oxford Parkway, Bicester Village station, Bicester North and London Marylebone.  Customers will use an app to travel which will also provide a history of journeys, prices and how the best value fare has been calculated.

Aaron Gowell, CEO of SilverRail said: “This partnership marks a breakthrough for rail customers, allowing them to seamlessly travel through stations without having to stop at a ticket machine while being charged the best priced ticket for on the day travel.  We are thrilled that Chiltern see investment in customer facing technology as the way forward, making rail travel much more efficient for travellers, whilst helping the entire network to work better.”

COMMUTER WATCH APP PROTOTYPE

Unexpected delays and disruption are all too common for public transport users. The Labs team tapped into its heritage of seamless journey planning across transportation modes (trains, subways, buses, bicycles, ferries etc) to address this, and has created a prototype watch app to help alleviate commuter pain, making the experience as simple and smooth as possible.

The Commuter Watch App works by using real-time data from operators to create push notifications for travellers, ensuring they get the travel information they need instantly; information such as departure times, platform details, delay notifications and journey fixes.  This will help smooth out the commuter experience, streamlining timings and making sure the right transport option is selected.

'A DAY IN THE LIFE OF' ANIMATION

TRANSPORT DATA TIME LAPSE

Every year SilverRail powers over 1 billion journey searches for partners around the world. This enables us to capture a wealth of data on travellers’ journey planning queries – showing us when, where and how they intend to travel.

We have collated all of this data to create our latest concept – A Day in the Life of’  animation. Illustrating the use of public transport in two key locations (Wellington, New Zealand and across Wales, UK), over a 24-hour period, it brings ground transportation volume, flow and direction to life.

This type of data is fundamental to transit and city planners

The animation offers a totally new way to represent transport intensity across locations. It can help to deliver data-driven insights to transit and city planners, changing the way they identify bottlenecks, current and future trends in traffic flows and present opportunities for improvements (new routes, increased frequency of services, traffic re-direction and so on).  All of this will mean better transportation flow and a better experience for travellers.
